Resumo: Este artigo tem como objetivo propor um modelo analítico para identificar preditores de regiões propensas à difusão de tecnologia de processo, bem como identificar e descrever funções de apoio à inovação. Utilizou-se as abordagens teóricas de difusão de inovações e de intermediários da inovação. Analisou-se a adoção de sistemas de integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP) no estado de São Paulo. O método proposto consistiu de (i) revisão da literatura sobre adoção e difusão de inovações e intermediários da inovação, (ii) um survey para identificar fatores que influenciam a adoção de ILP e (iii) a comparação de dois municípios com elevada difusão de ILP com sua região de desenvolvimento rural (EDR). Foram utilizados dados censitários sobre aspectos organizacionais e institucionais da região e características das propriedades rurais. Demonstrou-se que os preditores são: tamanho da propriedade; atividade pecuária e tipo de manejo predominantes; participação em cooperativa, sindicato rural e associação de produtores; além do acesso a serviços de extensão, seguro e crédito rural. Identificou-se que instituições e organizações atuam como intermediários da inovação, facilitando a interação e conexão entre os atores e promovendo serviços essenciais de apoio à adoção de tecnologias agrícolas.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to propose an analytical model to identify predictors of regions suitable for process technology diffusion, as well as identify and describe functions of innovation intermediaries. The theoretical approaches of innovation diffusion and innovation intermediaries were used. The adoption of integrated crop-livestock (ILP) systems in the state of São Paulo was analyzed. The method consisted of (i) a literature review on adoption and diffusion of innovation and innovation intermediaries, (ii) a survey to identify factors that influence the adoption of ILP, and (iii) the comparison of two municipalities with high diffusion of ILP with their rural development region (EDR). Census data on organizational and institutional aspects of the region and on farm characteristics were used. The results showed the following predictors: farm size; predominant livestock activity and herd management; membership in cooperatives, rural unions and farmer associations; in addition to access to rural extension services, insurance and credit. It was found that institutions and organizations act as innovation intermediaries, enabling interaction and connection between actors and promoting essential services to support the adoption of agricultural technologies.

Resumo: Pastagens degradadas têm baixa produtividade e impactos ambientais negativos. Sistemas que integram pecuária, lavoura e/ou floresta apresentam-se como uma alternativa para reverter esse cenário, mas sua adoção é heterogênea entre os produtores rurais. O objetivo deste estudo é investigar os fatores que influenciaram as primeiras decisões de adoção e a difusão a partir dos adotantes pioneiros. Três casos de adotantes pioneiros do estado de São Paulo foram investigados por meio de análise descritivo-exploratória. Os resultados mostram que instituições que atuam como intermediárias entre produtores rurais e outras instituições do sistema inovação têm um papel relevante na adoção, adaptação e difusão dos sistemas de integração. Cooperativas agropecuárias, associações de produtores rurais e serviços de extensão rural são exemplos de instituições intermediárias que cumpriram esse papel ao exercerem várias funções: auxiliaram no fluxo de informações, forneceram orientação técnica, apoiaram a comercialização e facilitaram o acesso ao financiamento e aos mecanismos de gestão de risco. Adicionalmente, identificou-se que as características pessoais do produtor pioneiro como experiência em atividades agropecuárias e sua capacidade de inovação (curiosidade por novidades, comunicação interpessoal e tolerância ao risco) também foram importantes para a adoção e adaptação dos sistemas de integração.

Abstract: Degraded pastures have low productivity and negative environmental impacts. Farming systems that integrate cattle breeding, crop, and/or forest are alternatives to reverse this scenario; however, their adoption is heterogeneous among farmers. This study aims to investigate factors that influenced the first decisions made concerning the adoption and the diffusion of these systems from early adopters. Three cases of early adopters from the state of São Paulo were investigated through descriptive-exploratory analysis. The results show that institutions that act as intermediaries between farmers and other institutions of the innovation system have a relevant role in the adoption, adaptation, and diffusion of integrated systems. Agricultural cooperatives, farmers’ associations, and rural extension services are examples of intermediary institutions that fulfill this role assuming several functions: they help in the flow of information, provide technical guidance, support trade, and facilitate access to credit and risk reduction managerial tools. Additionally, it was identified that early adopters’ characteristics such as the experience in agricultural activities and their innovation capacity (novelty seeking, interpersonal communication, and risk tolerance) were also important for the adoption and, adaptation of integrated systems.

RESUMO: A produção agrícola em monocultivo e a pecuária convencional não integrada com culturas foram desenhadas para um aumento rápido da produtividade e da oferta de alimentos. Entretanto, alguns destes sistemas de produção têm mostrado sinais de saturação e impactos ambientais negativos. Sistemas de integração lavoura-pecuária têm sido desenvolvidos como uma alternativa que oferece aumento de produtividade e maior sustentabilidade ambiental. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo estimar a viabilidade econômica e o risco financeiro associado a um projeto de investimento em integração lavoura-pecuária com foco para a produção de animais de corte em São Carlos, SP. Os resultados mostraram que o investimento é economicamente viável e apresenta Taxa Interna de Retorno superior à de um sistema convencional. Por meio da simulação de Monte Carlo constatou-se o sistema integrado apresenta menores riscos de mercado quando comparado com o sistema convencional.

ABSTRACT: Crop monoculture and single conventional cattle raising were designed for a rapid increase in productivity and food supply. However, some of these production systems have shown signs of saturation and negative environmental impacts. Crop-livestock integration systems have been developed as an alternative that delivers increased productivity and greater environmental sustainability. This article presents an evaluation of the economic viability and the financial risk associated with an investment in crop-livestock integration with a focus on the production of beef cattle in São Carlos, SP, Brazil. Results showed that the investment is economically viable and has an Internal Rate of Return higher than that of a conventional system. Monte Carlo simulations showed that the integrated system presents lower market risks when compared to the conventional system.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of agricultural insurance adoption by farmers of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Design/methodology/approach Primary data from the 2015/2016 crop season was collected from a sample of 175 farmers. Logit econometric models were applied to identify the variables that affect the probability of agricultural insurance adoption. Findings The empirical results show that the education level, access to technical assistance, use of management tools and farm size positively affect the probability of adopting agricultural insurance. In addition, farmers who produce soybean and/or corn are more likely to use insurance. On the other hand, the higher the farmers’ propensity to take risk the lower the likelihood of using insurance. Research limitations/implications The empirical analysis is based on cross-sectional data of a sample of 175 farmers of the state of São Paulo. The use of panel data with a larger sample of farmers, considering a period of years, could provide additional information. Originality/value To the best of the knowledge, this is the first empirical analysis about determinants of agricultural insurance adoption by Brazilian farmers, considering behavioral factors. The findings provide useful insights for policymakers in formulating risk management programs in the Brazilian agricultural markets. A better understanding about the determinants of insurance adoption is also relevant for private companies that sell insurance to farmers. Therefore, the paper may contribute with the diffusion of rural insurance as risk management tool in Brazilian agriculture.

RESUMO: O artigo tem como objetivo identificar os determinantes da adoção da rastreabilidade por pecuaristas no estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Uma amostra de 32 produtores que adotaram a certificação da rastreabilidade para a União Europeia e 52 que não adotaram a rastreabilidade forneceu dados para testar hipóteses a respeito de fatores determinantes. Três modelos logit binomial foram utilizados na análise. Os resultados sugerem que o sistema de produção pecuária intensiva, a elevada escala de produção, o acesso a informação especializada e a rede de relacionamentos desempenham papel significativo na decisão de adoção.

ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to identify the determinants of beef traceability adoption at farm level in São Paulo State, Brazil. A sample survey of 32 farmers who adopted the European Union certified traceability and 52 other farmers who did not adopt traceability provided data to test hypotheses on determinant factors. Three binomial logit models were used in the analysis. Results suggested that capital-intensive livestock production system, high scale production, access to specialized information and high level of human and social capital play significant role in the adoption decision.

Abstract Complementarity is an interesting approach to explain technology adoption. Taking account the other activities the farm performs in its production strategy can help understanding the decision on the adoption of new agricultural technology. This paper aims to evidence the existence of synergic effect resulting from the joint adoption of feedlot and traceability certification of beef cattle in Brazil. A sample of 84 beef cattle farms provided data to test hypotheses by using an OLS regression model. A measure of performance – revenue – is regressed on variables representing both isolated and joint adoption of capital-intensive production system and traceability. The results suggest the existence of synergic effect when joint adoption takes place. Joint adoption is influenced by a set of management practices, such as forward contracts, training of employees and zootechnical performance control, which are shared by both capital-intensive production systems and traceability.

Abstract TRACES (Trade Control and Expert System) is a veterinary health network created by the European Union to certify and monitor trade of animal products. This research aims to identify the factors that explain why few Brazilian farmers recognized adoption of the TRACES certification as a valuable opportunity. A farm is required to adopt traceability and a set of associated technologies to obtain certification. A sample of 84 beef cattle farms provided data for the testing of the hypotheses by means of a bivariate logit model. The recognition of the opportunity is positively correlated with previous experience with other quality programs, access to up-to-date information, a more diversified life experience, and active participation in relationship networks.

The objective of this study was to identify the factors determining the adoption of feedlot by beef cattle farmers in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. For this purpose, primary data were collected among a sample of 84 farmers. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a logit model. The analysis showed that the variables which increase the likelihood of adoption of feedlot by farmers are: scale of production, average price received, participation in farming associations, training, technical assistance and distance from the slaughter plant. Finally, measures for the formulation of public policies and private strategies were presented aiming at a more efficient use of production factor sand, consequently, gains in productivity by beef cattle farmers.

Este trabalho tem o objetivo principal de identificar os determinantes da demanda e do acesso ao crédito rural por bovinocultores de corte no estado de São Paulo. Para atingir tal objetivo, foram coletados dados primários por meio de entrevistas presenciais junto a uma amostra de 86 pecuaristas. Os dados foram analisados por meio de um modelo logit. Constatou-se que todos os pecuaristas que demandaram crédito rural obtiveram acesso a pelo menos um contrato. Os resultados mostraram que pecuaristas que têm maior número de propriedades rurais, maior intensidade em tecnologia na produção, fontes de renda oriunda de atividades não rurais, são mais novos, adotam gestão de risco de preço e participam de organizações associativas relacionadas à produção rural possuem maior probabilidade de demandar e acessar o crédito rural. Por fim, foram apresentadas algumas sugestões para a política de crédito rural para a pecuária de corte no estado de São Paulo.

The aim of this paper is to identify determinants of demand and access to rural credit by beef cattle farmers in the São Paulo State. Primary data were collected from 86 beef cattle farmers through a questionnaire survey. The empirical analysis of the survey data is performed with the estimation of a logit model. The results show that all farmers who demanded credit in 2010 had access to it. The logit model results showed that farmers who own more farms are more intensive in production technology, receive non-farm activities income, are younger, adopt price risk management and are members of organizations related to rural production have higher probability to demand and access rural credit. Finally, some suggestions were presented for the rural credit policy for beef cattle in São Paulo State.

A oscilação não favorável nos preços do boi gordo se constitui em um dos principais riscos da atividade pecuária. De forma a gerenciar tal risco, contratos a termo e futuros podem ser utilizados por pecuaristas. No entanto, o uso desses derivativos é bastante restrito, sendo as razões baseadas nas características do produtor e de seu negócio. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo teve o objetivo de identificar os determinantes da adoção de mecanismos de gestão de risco de preço do boi gordo por pecuaristas de corte no Estado de São Paulo. Para atingir esse objetivo, foram levantados dados primários junto a uma amostra de 86 pecuaristas, sendo as respostas analisadas por meio de um modelo Logit. Os resultados apontaram que, quanto maior a receita do pecuarista e seu grau de intensidade tecnológica e quanto menor o uso de dívidas para custeio e investimento, maior a probabilidade de se usar algum mecanismo de proteção.

The beef cattle price volatility is one of the main risks of this activity. To manage this risk, forward and futures contracts can be used by beef cattle farmers. However, the use of these contracts is quite restricted. The reasons are based on the characteristics of farmers and his business. In this context, this study aimed to identify the determinants factors of adoption of risk management mechanisms by beef cattle farmers in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. A logit model was used to analyze data from a sample of 86 beef cattle farmers. The results showed that the factors that significantly affected the adoption of the risk management tools were farm income, technological intensity and business leverage.

Objetivou-se, neste artigo, estimar os custos envolvidos no processo de resfriamento do leite cru, tipo B, após a implantação da Instrução Normativa 51 e a verificação das possíveis fontes de economias de escala nesse processo. A partir dos conceitos da engenharia econômica calculou-se o custo uniforme líquido equivalente de investimento do processo de resfriamento do leite, que somado ao custo operacional, resultou no custo uniforme líquido total por litro de leite. Concluiu-se que existe forte tendência à economia de escala nessa atividade devido aos retornos crescentes no custo de investimento e operacional, conforme aumenta-se a capacidade dos tanques de resfriamento.

This article aims to estimate the costs involved in the milk cooling process after the Normative Instruction 51 was issued and it also aims to verify the sources of economies scale. Using the concepts of the economical engineering, the uniform net costs of the investment in the milk cooling process were calculated. They were added to the operational cost and it resulted in the total uniform net cost per unit. It was concluded that there is a strong tendency to economies scale in the milk cooling process as a consequence of the growing returns in the investment and operational costs as the milk cooling tank capacity increases.

O evento da BSE, em adição a outros casos de riscos à saúde na indústria de alimentos, aumentou a preocupação e importância dada à segurança dos alimentos, particularmente à possibilidade de rastreamento de informações relevantes sobre os produtos. Este artigo objetiva verificar os custos e benefícios associados à adoção de um sistema de rastreabilidade na cadeia agroindustrial da carne bovina, motivada pela crise da BSE (Encefalopatia Espongiforme Bovina), assim como definir e rever o conceito de rastreabilidade. Dentre os fatores que caracterizam um sistema de rastreabilidade, destacam-se o escopo que se pretende abranger, o curso do produto, a definição da unidade rastreável e a forma de gerenciamento da informação ao longo da cadeia produtiva. Este sistema ainda é influenciado pelo ambiente institucional e pelas ações estratégicas das organizações.

The BSE crisis, in addition to other hazards in the food industry, increased the concern about food safety and traceability, in particular. The article aims to investigate the costs and benefits of a traceability system in the beef production chain, induced by the BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) crisis. As an intermediary goal, this paper reviews and defines the concept of traceability, with emphasis on the food industry. The traceability system is characterized by its degree of comprehension, product path, the definition of the traceable unit and the information management throughout the chain. The institutional environment and the organizations strategic actions also influence the choice of a specific traceability system.
